Basic Skills

The Learn to Skate classes are divided into 3 Skill Levels: Little Stars, Level 1 and Level 2
  • Little Stars Programs: Ages 3 - 5: Snowplow Sam 1, 2, 3, & 4, Tot Basic 1
  • Level 1 Class: Basic Skills 1, 2, 3 & 4 (Previously Pre-Alpha & Alpha)
  • Level 2 Class: Basic Skills 5 & 6 (Previously Beta, Gamma & Delta)
Basic Skills – FUNdamentals Basic Skills teaches the FUNdamentals of ice skating and provides the best foundation for recreational skating, figure skating, hockey, and speedskating. Six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns.

Discover, Learn and Play – Basic Skills 1 and 2: These introductory levels allow new skaters with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning to skate.

FUNdamentals – Basic Skills 3–6: These levels develop all of the fundamental skating skills on the ice. Focus is on learning the ABCs of basic athleticism: agility, balance, coordination and speed. Upon completion of these levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating.

Upon completion of the Basic Skills 1-6 levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating. All classes will be well-structured with the focus on proper skill development taught in a positive, FUN, and social environment. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after skill mastery is demonstrated. 

SKATERS WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY PARTICIPATED IN THE RMU ISC PROGRAMS IN TOT 1, 2, 3, 4 and/or PRE-ALPHA, ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA & DELTA WILL BE PLACED IN THE APPROPRIATE CLASS BASED ON THE LEARN TO SKATE USA CONVERSION CHART.  See listed above.

Classes:
Little Stars Classes
Skaters who are between the ages of 3 - 5 , with little or no experience. Little Stars will learn the basics of skating in an age appropriate setting. Little Stars will be taught the skills of the Snowplow Sam 1, 2, 3, 4 & Tot Basic 1 skill tests.

Level 1 Class
All skaters who have no formal instructional experience and/or have not passed the ISI Beta level skating test will begin in the Level 1 class. Level 1 skaters will be instructed the skills of the Learn to Skate USA: Basic 1, 2, 3, & 4

Level 2 Class
Skaters must have formal lesson experience and have passed the Basic Skills 1, 2, 3 & 4 skills tests or their equivalent in order to participate in the Level 2 class. Level 2 skaters will be instructed on the skills of Learn to Skate USA: Basic 5 & 6

Level 1 Class Times 
Wednesday - 6:30 - 7:00 PM
Saturday - 12:30 - 1:00 PM
Level 1 includes skaters ages 6 and up, with no formal instructional experience and/or skaters with previous instructional experience at the Basic Skill Tests: 1, 2, 3 or 4 (Previously Pre-Alpha & Alpha.)

Level 1 includes a weekly 30-minute instructional class, skate rental, if necessary and public skating session. Students must attend the same class day and time throughout the program series.

Level 2 Class Times 
Wednesday - 5:50 - 6:30 PM
Saturday - 11:50 AM - 12:30 PM
Level 2 includes skaters who have passed the Basic Skills Tests: 1, 2, 3 & 4 (previously ISI Pre-Alpha & Alpha skills test) and are at the Basic 5 or 6 skill level (Previously Gamma or Delta level) or approval from the Skating Director.

Level 2 includes a weekly 40-minute instructional class: 10 minutes of stroking workshop and 30-minute skill focused instruction, skate rental, if necessary and public skating session. Students must attend the same class day and time throughout the program series.

PLEASE NOTE: Skaters who have participated in the RMU ISC skating school programs and have passed the ISI skills tests: Tot 1-4 and/or Pre-Alpha - Delta,  will be placed in the appropriate Learn to Skate USA Basic Skills level and will not need to "repeat" any of the lower Basic Skills levels to be placed in the appropriate class.

Make-Up Classes
Students are limited to one make-up class per series, which must be completed before the end of the registered session.

Refunds
Refunds will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If a refund is permitted, it will be pro-rated from the request date and must be approved by the Skating Director. Refunds after 4 weeks of class will not be permitted.

Please Note: Classes have a limited number of spaces and tend to fill-up prior to the first day of classes. Please register early to ensure a spot for your skater(s).

To register for any of the Skating School programs including: Learn to Skate Level 1 & 2 and Little Stars programs you may go to our web site: www.rmuislandsports.org   
Click on "Register/Log-In"  Once you have created or logged into your account - search on activities to find the Skating School Schedule of Classes.

ON-LINE REGISTRATION IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR CLASSES 72 HOURS PRIOR TO THE START OF THE SESSION. 

Or you may contact the customer service desk by calling: 412.397.4454. If they are not with another customer, they will be able to take your call and register the skater(s) over the phone with a credit card. Full payment is due at time of registration. You may also register in person by going to the main desk at the Island Sports Center. 

*Learn to Skate USA Membership

Upon completion of a skater's first skill test (Snowplow Sam 1 or Basic 1) skaters must become become members of  the 2016-17 Learn to Skate USA Membership season in order to advance to the next skill test level in the Little Stars or Level 1 or Level 2 programs. 

Skaters my register at: https://www.learntoskateusa.com/signuphomepage/  and click on 'become a member'. Once you have completed the registration process you will be e-mailed a confirmation page with a confirmation number. We will need this number to enroll you in the Skating School programs.
